The organization was founded on December 18, 1878 in Boston, Massachusetts by Dr. Darius Wilson and nine others.〔Stevens, Albert Clark, 1854- ''The Cyclopædia of Fraternities: A Compilation of Existing Authentic Information and the Results of Original Investigation as to More than Six Hundred Secret Societies in the United States'' (New York: Hamilton Printing and Publishing Company), 1899, p.123〕 Some of the founders had participated in the founding of the Royal Arcanum and Dr. Wilson was also connected with the Knights of Honor〔Stevens p.123〕 and was reportedly a members of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.〔Schmidt p.35〕
